How to calculate take-home pay
A useful estimate separates annual tax liability, payroll tax and per-paycheck withholding.
For a simple federal estimate: subtract eligible pre-tax contributions and the standard deduction, apply the brackets progressively, then estimate employee FICA on gross wages. Subtract those amounts from gross pay and divide by your pay frequency.
A real paycheck can differ because Form W-4 adjustments, benefits, bonuses, multiple jobs, state rules and payroll timing all affect withholding.
